The minute the bell rang after her last class Aria sprinted to the theater. There was only one thing that would take her mind off of school and everything else that drove her insane, and that was to play. It had been a while since she had played the piano; when her mother came home from the hospital her father insisted that she take a break from the piano. For the whole summer she had not been able to put fingers to keys and it caused her to have a lot of tension. She had been under a lot of stress that last couple of months and in specific the last weeks of summer. Aria could only relieve that stress by playing. Plus she had a senior recital at the end of the year that would determine a lot of things for her.
Aria sat at the piano and pondered what she wanted to play. To warm up she decided on something simple, and eventually she'd make sure to hit on her recital piece that she was supposed to be working on. Being able to finally vent her energy made her feel one hundred times better, and the amazing thing was she had tried not to take the anti depressants. As she finished off the easiest song she could remember in her repertoire she sat looking blankly at the keys, afraid to play her recital piece. It had been a whole year, and she was sure she had forgotten it.
Sighing heavily, she decided to go for it. Her spirit was lifting as she played the first few bars perfectly, but everything was shot to hell after that. It only took one horrifying bar to screw her up. She tried playing it over again, but none of the note combinations or chords matched what the melody was supposed to sound like. "Great. How am I supposed to play this perfectly by April," she asked herself. To calm herself she began playing something else but messed that up as well. Now she was extremely frustrated. Why couldn't she just play? Without even thinking about it she went into one of the scenes from 'Next to Normal,' but this time she sang and played at the same time.
Last year, over the summer, the community had put on the show and she had gotten the role of Natalie. She had never played anything that spoke to her more. And as she sang through the bars it was like she was actually in her own little musical. In fact, she might have gotten into it a bit much. Aria looked up and realized that someone else was in the room with her. Coolly she stood up from the piano bench and went down the stage steps. "I'm leaving if you want the stage."
