Ellen couldn't even begin to describe how nervous she felt. In fact, she could hardly keep anything down at breakfast which, of course, garnered a few curious looks from her children and Lawson. At this point the two of them were beginning to get into the flow of living together, but that wasn't why she was feeling so apprehensive. No, tonight her parents were coming over for dinner so that they could finally meet Lawson. Ena was coming over too because her parents hadn't seen her in quite some time, so Ellen suggested that they just make it one big family affair. However, now that it was the day, she regretted it. She smiled weakly before putting her plate in the sink and scrubbing rapidly.
The last time her parents had been in Road Island was months ago immediately after the accident. Ellen hadn't seen them since the fourth of July, and the last time she had talked to Ena was that disaster of a dinner party she tried to hold. To say she was freaking out about this coming event would be an understatement. The previous night, the woman had cleaned the house like crazy and now she was cleaning her dish like crazy. At that, Marcus shot Lawson a confused look before standing up to set his plate next to her, surprised when Ellen didn't even acknowledge him. After a few minutes of scrubbing the plate clean, she rinsed it before drying it and set it next to the sink. She then proceeded to scrub her son's plate clean, and when that was done she rapidly walked out of the kitchen without even making eye contact. Ellen needed to concentrate on getting the already clean house absolutely pristine and spotless.
She began scrubbing down the coffee tables, vacuuming the carpet, cleaning the fireplace that they never used, and cleaning the windows. Once that was done, she polished her wine glasses and good silverware before setting the table with her best linens and China Dishes. Once the house was completely clean, she went into the bedroom to get herself ready. Upon opening the door she jumped slightly to see Lawson laying on the bed, reading a book. "Oh my God! You scared me," she said, taking a deep breath before going into the bathroom to brush her teeth. Once that was finished she exited and went into her closet to look for something to wear. That was when something dawned on her. Nobody knew. Nobody knew she was pregnant. Her parents didn't know and her sister didn't know, but she was showing quite a bit now. She left her closet and made eye contact with Lawson. "I don't know what to wear," she said, her eyes wide. "They don't know! They don't know I'm pregnant," she said before turning on her heal back into the closet. Right now, she felt like she was going to die.
Frantically, she went through each article of clothing before finally picking a grey sheath dress. It wasn't the most attractive dress on the planet, but it was simple, classy, and covered everything. She left the closet and held it up "Maybe we should cancel. I think we should. Really, you don't need to meet my parents. You don't need to meet my sister....Lawson we should cancel. We need to cancel." she repeated, pretty sure she sounded like she had lost it. She took a deep breath and let it out. "I'm fine. It's fine, they're my parents. It will be fine," she said before taking her jeans and blouse off. She looked up at him. "It's going to be fine," she repeated. "Just don't bring up politics," she said before stepping into the dress. "And only speak when she addresses you," she said, attempting to zip up the dress, not quite able to get it all the way up on her own. "And call her Doctor Watson, she likes that, and when she mentions her work nod and say 'you're an inspiring female in the field of politics,' even if you don't agree with her," she said.
Once her dress was on, she put some jewelry on before applying a touch of makeup. She looked at herself in the mirror, and took a deep breath. She went over to Lawson, and gave him a peck on the lips before fixing his tie for him. "Don't make fun of the wealthy either because they have so much money they don't even know what to do with it, but at the same time, at least with my mother, realize she likes to pretend she doesn't care about money," she said before looking up at him. When she heard the doorbell ring her heart started beating rapidly and she let out a shaky breath. "And remember. Even after all is said and done, I still love you," she said before exiting their room.
As she descended the stairs she thought she was going to be sick, and grasped his hand halfway down the steps. She found herself at the door, not quite recalling how she got there exactly. Shakily, she placed her hand on the handle and opened the door to reveal her mother, dressed in a probably very expensive pant suit, and her father dressed in a pair of khaki pants, a polo, and a sport coat. They both looked right out of a Brooks Brothers catalog. Her mother smiled and immediately took her into a hug. "Darling! I swear, I'm going to move to Rhode Island soon! And have you gained weight? Do I need to put you on a diet?" she said before planting a kiss on her cheek. "I've missed you too mother," Ellen said, cringing slightly at the hug. When she was finished greeting her mom, she gave her father a hug and laughed warmly. Once she let go she turned so she was facing everyone. "Mom, dad this is Lawson," she said proudly. Ellen's mom held her hand out. "Hello Lawson, I'm Doctor Alyssa Watson." Her mother said. Next, Ellen's father smiled. "I trust you're treating our Ellen well. If you're not I'll have to get the good old shot gun out, if you know what I mean," he said with a wink, his British accent heavy. "And It's a pleasure to meet you old chap, I'm Marcus Watson," he added.
