PERSONALITY

HISTORY
Mother: Daisy
Grandmother: Opal
Peridot's upbringing was easily half of a whole. While he received near-limitless affection from his mother, his father's doting was, in a word, limited. Daisy, having a very hands-on career, was called away from weeks and even months at a time to aid in an excavation, while Bradley's job sang an opposite tune. Being a banker, he worked long hours, but remained a geographically stationary figure. He believed in earning one's way without favouritism, though this mentality rose fairly quickly to "without guidance".
Suffice it to say, there were many long nights filled with shouting matches between the boy and his father, the issue being anything from Peridot's future choices to his choice of significant other. For a conservative traditionalist, having his son come home with a variety of partners each week (of varying gender and age) came as a considerable blow to his pride. Having given up on impressing the man, however, Peridot became an expert on escapism of both the literal and metaphorical type.
At the tender age of sixteen, however, tragedy struck the Faulkener household. A freak accident at a job in the badlands resulted in the death of Daisy. Overcome with grief, the fights between Peri and his father escalated indefinitely until spiteful words of blame were exchanged shortly before another of Peridot's infamous runnings away from home. in an uncharacteristic display of anguish and lamentation, Bradley, after seeking futile comfort from the bottle, took his own life, and was later discovered by the cleaning woman the next morning.
Being a minor and in no fit state to care for himself, Peridot's maternal grandmother took him in and, while she had never been a prominent figure in his life before the death of his parents, he soon came to depend solely on her, a responsibility she gladly undertook. With a heavy heart, the teenager moved from the city to his grandmother's rural farmhouse. There, after never appreciating the night sky, he was able to witness for the first time the wonders of the cosmos.
From the time that the elderly Opal assumed custody of Peri, his demeanour drastically changed. No longer was he the attention-starved youth doing anything to get a rise out of authority figures. Instead he channeled his excitable personality into more productive hobbies such as star gazing and, after saving up money from odd jobs he managed to pick up, purchased his first telescope. Peridot reveled in the heavens and what humans could learn from them. Having avoided planning for his future career for the majority of his life, Peri soon became avidly involved in anything to do with space and arranged preparations for schooling.
After attending the University of Chicago and acquiring a major in astrophysics, Peridot sought a teaching degree, confident that he'd be capable of passing on his knowledge of the universe to impressionable young brians.
