She felt nothing yet at the same time she felt everything. Her heart felt like it had been ripped out of her chest and shattered into a million shards just like the glass on the floor. She felt foolish and betrayed, and it was like nothing she had felt before in her life. When it came to the physical pain, however, she felt nothing. Despite the fact her hands were bloodied and torn apart with little pieces of glass stuck in the wound, she didn't feel a thing. In fact, she didn't even know her hands were mangled. The only pain she could feel was internal. Ellen was so lost in the internal pain that she hadn't heard him enter the house, the screams inside of her were simply far too loud.
Upon feeling a rubbing at her robe, however, her head whipped around. She was so confused, her emotions a mix of anger, relief, joy, and uncertainty. In fact she felt a little overwhelmed. What was he doing back here? Perhaps he had changed his mind and decided to come back to her, or maybe he was in the house the entire time and she just managed to miss him. Regardless of the reason, Ellen still felt emotionally unstable, and it was overwhelming to see him in front of her after breaking down over the thought of losing him forever. Because of this, she couldn't answer him. It wasn't like she was giving him the silent treatment or anything, she was just numb, overwhelmed, and completely stunned.
As the ability to feel came rushing back to her, her lip began to quiver. "You son of a bitch!" she said, her voice soft yet packing a biting punch. Then the sobs began to come, and she felt like a stupid child for crying in front of him, so she began hitting his chest angrily. "Why didn't you wake me up?" she said, continuing to hit his chest, unknowingly pushing the glass further into her hands before slapping him across the face, unaware of how unstable she appeared. And then she kissed him. Hard, and desperate, unsure what motivated her to do it. Perhaps it was the relief of not losing him, or the fact she was just a little crazy at the moment, but for some reason she did it. "I thought you left me," she said. "I thought you were never coming back."
