it's empty in the valley of your heart
Jessica nodded enthusiastically when her friend asked if it was really that bad. It really was. Jessica did not approve of their relationship; she feared Lawson would only end up getting his heart broken by this woman. That was not something she wanted to see. "It's worse than bad," she added. OK, maybe she was exaggerating now, but she couldn't help it. There really was something about Ellen that just rubbed her the wrong way. It was probably because they were direct polar opposites from each other. But Jessica wanted to pin it on something else. She wanted to pin it on Ellen alone.
Jess shrugged when Evvie asked how they made it work. "I have no idea Ev," she said, shrugging her shoulders. "But it's always Ellen this and Ellen that. My God you'd think they were married," she said before taking a breath of air and letting it out. She needed to watch her tongue. She didn't want to say too much and risk getting in trouble with Lawson. He might not have known Jess's new best friend was actually his old flame, but for some reason she just felt wrong saying much more about his girlfriend behind his back.
As Evelyn explained what Lawson and her decided to wait and tell Lily when she was older, she nodded in agreement. "That sounds like the best idea," Jessica said. She still didn't know the whole story, but it would be rude to ask, right? Her eyes widened when Evelyn mentioned having Lawson spend time with Lily, Jeff and her. "Well," she started before clearing her throat. "That sounds like an honorable idea," Jess said with an encouraging smile. "But good luck convincing Ellen. As I said, she can be a bit possessive," she said. "Also, I don't think Lawson would just pop in and out like that. Not if it's his decision. He's not the type of man to do that."
