It looked like Ellen was begging him with her eyes, but Lawson wasn't sure what exactly she was begging for. Then after a few moments it dawned on him that perhaps she wanted him to forget about the fight and everything that had been said. That would be logical, but he really hoped Ellen could understand that it would take some time. On his end, at least. Although he knew it had only been a fight, and their first one, he just couldn't forget the words so easily. Hopefully if they ever had a horrible fight like this again he could forget the words.
He wasn't prepared for her eyes to darken at his question and it worried him. Had he upset her again? He braced himself for another battle and held back a wince when he saw Ellen take a deep breath. Perhaps the question had really upset her, but he had to ask it. At her question, he shrugged and shook his head. "Because like I said before, I feel like it's my fault." He said hurriedly. The words couldn't come out of his mouth fast enough. He nervously ran a hand through his hair and exhaled harshly, his eyes only able to stare at the linoleum floor. At Ellen's next statement, Lawson's eyes looked hopefully up into hers and relief began to take over in his body. But he shook his head firmly when she said she needed to blame herself. "We were both at fault, Ellen." He said to her. He wasn't expecting a hug and he held back a smile at the awkwardness of it. It was endearing to see and touching to know that Ellen hugged him even though she obviously didn't want to right now. She didn't seem like the kind of woman who was affectionate during tough times, but that was another way Lawson balanced her out: he easily gave affection when someone needed it. It also proved to him that she really didn't mean the words she'd said to him. He still had a slight doubt only because the words had to come from her subconscious, but then again he'd said things to people out of anger that he honestly didn't mean. Maybe he'd been so angry that he'd meant them at the time, but then he'd regret it and realize how wrong he had been. So he just told himself that it was the same with Ellen. She was human just like everyone else.
He slowly wrapped his arms around her and pulled her closer, closing his eyes and savoring her words. A small smile appeared on his face and any doubt he had began to disappear. He knew Ellen was being sincere and he wasn't going to hold this against her. Hopefully they could chalk it up as a mistake and move on. Through Ellen's words Lawson was finding it easier to forget her words of blame.
He looked down at her and continued to smile gently at her. "I love you, too, Ellen. And I already have forgiven you." He kissed her forehead and then chuckled. "Now, let's get the doctor back in here and apologize for our behavior. Hopefully we won't need to find a new hospital. How was the rest of the check-up? I'm sorry I missed it." He frowned slightly.
