Grace peeked out from under her mother's hair as well as her own. It was funny how much Claudia's children resembled her and how little they actually looked like her husband. She continued to sway gently with the little girl and rubbed her back comfortingly. The little girl played with her mother's hair.
"Tiwed," she said. She had trouble pronouncing her R's--and her L's. She always made them sound like a W, regardless of how many times Claudia corrected her. She just couldn't make her mouth form the words properly.
When Claudia placed the pancakes in front of her, the little girl started eating them quietly. She did not bother putting syrup on them or using a fork. She pulled them apart with her chubby fingers and stuffed them in her mouth. Claudia placed a sippy cup of milk in front of her and watched as the little girl ate quietly. She did seem tired--and she would not be opposed to letting her little girl go back to sleep. She then turned her attention back to Silas.
"She does that a lot," she explained, turning back to the counter to make herself a cup of coffee. She poured the dark liquid into a cup, and then a little bit of cream and sugar. She could drink coffee any way, but she preferred it as café con leche. She did not speak while her back was to him. Once the mixture was made and all stirred together, the woman turned and leaned forward onto the island. She took a sip of her coffee.
"Kennedy said she didn't fall asleep until late last night, probably not too long before we got home. She usually goes to bed at eight or nine." She rested the cup on the counter and wrapped her petite hands around it. "She usually sleeps in my bed--with me. So she probably had trouble falling asleep last night." The woman nodded her head and watched as her little girl chewed on the pancake. She smiled gently. Grace was too cute for her own cook.
"Mama, soogah," she said, sitting up on her knees and grabbing the sippy cup. Claudia obviously had to process the nonsense word in her head before she turned and grabbed the sugar bowl off the counter. She sprinkled a little bit of sugar on the pancakes for her. Had she been trying to say sugar or azúcar? It was weird... Claudia had never tried to teach Grace words in Spanish because she thought it might confuse her, but she did use occasional Spanish words around the house, when she was talking to Kennedy or herself. "Tank ew,"she said, her form of 'thank you'. Claudia nodded her head. She had missed these moments when her other children were little and they still had manners--or it seemed that they had manners. "Sweepy tie," she said as she stuffed more pancakes in her mouth. Claudia nodded her head and looked at Silas.
"I'm going to put her back to bed after she eats," she explained, nodding her head affirmatively. "I don't like doing that, but... I have to let her sleep."
