Lawson hoped that was the case. Sometimes parents could be sensitive and get upset that someone else was being told things that they weren't. The feeling was justifiable in certain situations, and this might be one of them since Emma didn't want to ruin what she had with her new foster family. Her moms could understand that, right? It was a shame Emma couldn't get a restraining order sooner but she had a point. "Well we'll get you one tomorrow and make sure Liam follows it." He smiled and patted Emma's hand. "See? I told you your family cares about you." He was glad Emma had her brother for protection.
He watched the siblings' interaction with a faint smile, remembering how he and Gabriel used to be close. But he pushed the memory away. "Of course. And I don't blame you. But it might not help the case tomorrow with the police." He chuckled and motioned for them to sit down. "Well it can be hard to get help when someone with power over you is telling you not to. But I told Emma we would call your parents tomorrow and head over to the police station. I'd like to come with you all if that's okay. I'm a lawyer."

Emma heard what he suggested and she smiled up at him with a genuine smile. "For the first time in my life, I'm actually going to feel safe," Emma whispered. It will be such a great feeling for Emma to know that he can no longer harm her and if he did, he would be in violation of the law and he would be prosecuted for it. "I guess it's just I had no one to care about me like my new family does that I've told myself that it's all an act and that they truly don't care for me. It's been hard to believe that this is going so right... I'm just waiting for it to go wrong."
Brandon smiled at the man in front of him. "That's true. Plus it would probably hurt her more if I did that to him, regardless of what he's doing to her," Brandon said. He sat down on the couch with Emma curled next to him. He lightly rubbed her back, soothing her into a calming state. Brandon listened to what the man said and he nodded. "From what she's told me about him, he's manipulative and he knows it. He knows that he has her eating from the palm of his hand and it kills me to see that. My moms will definitely want to be there and I'll be there too. You have to be there. Emma trusts you and has opened up to you about this. That's really big for her. She doesn't really trust many people. So for her to tell you all of this, it's a big deal." Brandon looked at him. "So where do we go from here tonight?"

Lawson smiled, feeling his heart warm. It felt good to know he was doing something good. He nodded as Emma explained her worries. Her last sentence summed up his relationship with Ellen right now, but of course he didn't let her know that. "I don't think it will, Emma."
He nodded in agreement with Brandon's statement and was glad to see the boy was so smart. He listened closely to what Brandon had to say about Liam and he was humbled. All it took was patience and understanding to allow Emma to open up to him and trust him. He knew how fragile trust was and he wasn't about to do something to intentionally break it. Hopefully it would never be accidentally broken, either. "Well I'm glad she was able to tell me what was happening instead of fighting this by herself. Tonight we rest and tomorrow morning after breakfast we'll go down to the police station. You're welcome to stay the night as long as you let your parents know where you are."

Brandon looked at his sister and back at Lawson. "I told my parents I didn't want her to stay on the school's campus. I wanted her to be driven to and from school so she was protected and nothing would happen to her. But when my moms didn't agree and they enrolled her to stay on campus, I prayed that she would fit in and find a group of friends to watch over her," Brandon said softly, running a hand through her hair. "I'm glad she has you who she trusts and can confide in. You, taking her in like this and protecting her, it means so much to me." Brandon heard what he offered and he nodded. "I sent them a text and let them know. If you'll just show me to the guest room, I'll tuck her into bed." He could tell his sister was already asleep by the evenness of her breaths.
The next morning, Emma woke up with a scream. She looked around and panicked. She had no idea where she was. It wasn't her room at the school. None of her stuff was in the room. The dream... it felt so real. His hands, his lips. She rushed out of the room and to the bathroom. She turned on the faucet and grabbed a washcloth that was in the tub. She drenched the wash cloth in scorching hot water. Crying, she rubbed her skin to the point where it was ready to bleed if she did it anymore. Brandon was downstairs with Lawson when he heard the scream. He rushed up the stairs and looked in the bedroom. When he didn't see Emma, he ran to the bathroom and he grabbed the washcloth, turned the water to cold and drenched the cloth in cold water. He took Emma in his arms and held her tightly to him, even though she fought against him. He placed the cold wash cloth on her arm, where she was rubbing. He rocked her back and forth, whispering 'shhh' to her.
ELLEN ELIZABETH WATSON: That sounds familiar. I used to be that way. I still am, but I've learned to let go a little.

EMMA GRACE DANVERS (GOODMAN): Alec is too good to me, how did I deserve him. I'm such a perfectionist that I am afraid to screw up

ELLEN ELIZABETH WATSON: Everyone screws up. I've screwed up so many times I can't even keep track, but you just have to pick yourself up and learn to forgive yourself which can be the hardest thing to do

EMMA GRACE DANVERS (GOODMAN): Thank you so much Ellen. I know Alec is there to encourage me, but sometimes I feel he's put me on this great mother pedestal. I'm afraid of screwing up.

ELLEN ELIZABETH WATSON: I wouldn't worry too much Emma. You're very maternal, something I never was, and I managed to do it alone. If you ever need to talk about parenting, I'm always here
Sept 18, 2013 22:10:52 GMT -5
EMMA GRACE DANVERS (GOODMAN): I'm just worried about being a good mother. Since my own mother is no longer here to advice me. I just want to do her proud *nervous look*
Sept 18, 2013 22:09:25 GMT -5
EMMA GRACE DANVERS (GOODMAN): well I think Alec will be worried when it comes to that age. He'll probably buy a shotgun and ward off any boy who comes a courting.

ELLEN ELIZABETH WATSON: -laughs- you don't have to worry about that for a while. I told Victoria when she was going into sixth grade, but I think it also depends on the child
