They were still at odds over the whole Lily thing, and Lawson didn't like that. But he wasn't going to give up. Quite the contrary; today was Valentine's Day, and Lawson was going to make it special. He kissed sleeping Ellen's forehead before getting out of bed and getting dressed. He wore a chocolate brown sweater and dark wash jeans. He went downstairs and began making breakfast, thankful he knew how to cook. Once breakfast was made he put the food on a tray and put a rose in a vase, topping off the silver platter. The pancakes were in a smiley face pattern and he smiled proudly to himself as he walked upstairs. He knew Ellen was going to love this, and he needed the brownie points.
He hadn't done something like this on Valentine's Day in a long time, and it felt good to be doing it again. The hopeless romantic trait ran in his genes, and he had both of his romantic parents to thank for that. Maybe he went over the top sometimes, but wasn't it better than not being romantic at all? He liked to think so. But his romantic side also tended to have a silly side, sometimes. He'd gotten Ellen a light pink blazer for Valentine's Day just to show her that he didn't hate them as much as he said he did. They did look good on her, but she wore them all the time; even Lawson, a straight man, felt like Ellen needed some variety in her wardrobe.
He set the tray on the bed and pulled the stuffed bear out of the closet. It was holding a heart pillow that was embroidered with the words 'I Love You' on it. He placed it next to Ellen's head and gently rang the small silver bell on the tray. "Wake up, Sleeping Beauty. Happy Valentine's Day!" He said with a soft, loving smile. He was nervous, though, and was afraid she'd totally discount everything he'd done for her this morning. That would crush him.
