The light was blinding and it hurt his head. He winced and groaned slightly, trying to move his arm. It felt like lead and his whole body felt like it had just been run over by a truck. It didn't take him long to remember what had happened the last time he was conscious and his eyes flew open, his head making him pay by pounding harder than it already was. He scanned the area around him and sighed when he saw that he was in a hospital. Why? Why hadn't he died? It would be so much better than living. He'd be in Heaven where there was no heartache; he wouldn't yearn for Ellen.
It took a lot of effort to move any of his limbs so he quit trying and settled for moving his head, instead. As he turned his head to his right he saw a familiar face near him. What was Evelyn doing here? Did someone call her? But why would they call her? His tired, bruised brain couldn't come to a conclusion so he settled for just asking his question out loud. "Evelyn, what are you doing here?" There was no bitterness in his voice, just genuine confusion. His voice was also raspy since he hadn't had anything to drink in awhile. Evelyn's face was actually a wonderful thing to wake up to, and it made his mind seem a bit clearer. Lawson liked to think that they were becoming fast friends. They talked a lot before classes started and saw each other around campus, but they both understood that they put their studies first and put social life on campus second. Not a lot of the other students did the same so he and Evelyn had that special bond. In fact, she reminded him of Ellen in a lot of ways. He wasn't sure how to feel about that, so he decided not to think about it for now. They were both passionate about winning cases and debating and had so many other things in common. But why on earth was she in his hospital room, and how did he even get here? The last thing he remembered was jumping out of his window, then nothing.
