wasn't looking where i was going, i fell into your eyes
It had been so long since Harper had allowed herself to think about Kennedy. Longer still since she'd seen her or even heard anything about her, but if she thought about it, she could still remember the way she smelled. Some things didn't fade with time, and her memories of that girl were one of them. She'd seen another girl in between, but that had been a mistake in it's entirety. When Sam had come to her and sat her down about everything she still felt for Ryker, Harper was hurt...at first. Until she realized that many of her feelings remained in tact for Kennedy as well. It had made the split between Harper an easy one to manage, and they remained friends through it all. Frankly, they had way too much history to walk away from one another because of a mistake.
In fact, if she were to try and pin their previous time together down, she believed it was when she'd found out Kennedy's parents had passed. She hadn't even second-guessed the need for her to offer comfort to her in that time, but as soon as Kennedy seemed to be doing alright, Ryker had chased her off. 'Thank you, and I appreciate what you're trying to accomplish, but you've done enough.' Those words still stung; everyone told her to shrug them off because 'they were hurting' and 'Ryker was just looking out for Kennedy', but it had been enough for her courage to even talk to the girl to wash away.
And now, another world seemed to have gone by. She was starting college, her career path, her life, and as far as she knew, Kennedy was repeating sophomore year. Even if she had wanted to reconnect with her despite everything, in perspective it seemed best now to keep it at a friendship level. Besides, knowing Kennedy, it wasn't exactly safe to even assume that there was still room for her. Kennedy changed her wants and needs and desires almost as much as she changed her shirts. There was no telling if Harper was even welcome in her life anymore, especially after Ryker successfully chased her off without allowing Harper to say so much as a word to the other girl.
There was no reason she couldn't try, though, right? No reason she couldn't just text her to find out how she was doing or if she needed anything or what she was up to? No reason she couldn't casually invite her over, as friends, for dinner some night or just to hang out or maybe take a trip to the mall? There was so much that the two no longer knew about each other. Was her favorite color even the same? Well, of course it was, but everything else was different and she was sure of that. It seemed wrong for them to not even be talking; they'd grown up together, they'd been friends and then best friends and then lovers for so long that this silence on either end seemed unnatural.
That's right Harper, be the bigger person. Do it, text her.
Don't. You're being a skeeze. She's too young, you're too different.
Finally, she pulled her phone out from her pocket, found Kennedy's number, and opened a blank text. 'Hey uh. It's been a while, wanted to know how you were doing. You should stop by sometime so we can catch up. I'm in the college building, room 283.' She set her phone down and picked it back up several times, debating on what to do, before ultimately forcing herself to send it off. Regret grew a pit in her stomach, and she began chewing at her lip so hard that she tasted blood.
Well, just because you texted her doesn't mean she'll answer, right?
But Harper knew she would, that Kennedy always would.
The same as she knew her favorite color was still pink.
i couldn't live without you now, wouldn't last one night alone
