How fickle my heart and how woozy my eyes
wearing
College was proving to be a lot harder than Aria had anticipated. She was double majoring in theatre and music which she knew was not going to be easy, but she was determined. Her academic adviser at Yale had explained to her that she'd have to put in a lot of practice time if she wanted to succeed, and she was willing to do that. The majority of her free time was spent studying and practicing the piano. She had joined Yale Drama Coalition along with the Symphony Orchestra, but she was finding it hard to balance those clubs and her schoolwork, so she was considering dropping the extra-curricular activities so she could focus on studying.
Aria was happy that she had gotten into such a good school. She knew it would really help her in the long run when she tried to get a job, but the process was just very stressful. Thankfully, Connecticut was not far from Rhode Island, and Aria only had to drive about two hours to get home. When she first got into the college of her choice, homesickness was never a thought that crossed her mind, but some days she really did long for home. She missed her friends, what few she had anyway, and she surprisingly missed her dad. Maybe he wasn’t her favorite person over the past few years, but he was her daddy, and she was beginning to realize that he had tried to do his best to make a good life for her.
While she was away at school, she had really gotten the chance to think about her past and the mistakes she had made. No longer did she feel the need to take drugs or act out. In fact, she had made some really close friends. Friends that actually understood her and shared the same interests that she did. Her roommate was a biology student who was planning on going to medical school after she finished her undergraduate. Although they weren’t in the same field, they shared a lot of the same likes and dislikes. Plus, they didn’t have to worry about competing with each other for grades because biology and the performing arts were literally on the opposite ends of the spectrum. Her roommate could, however, help her with her science homework, and Aria helped her roommate with English and humanities courses.
As much as she loved campus, Aria had decided to come this weekend. She hadn’t been home since the last day of summer, and she was excited to see all of her old friends. She had texted Sam earlier in the week to tell her she was going to be down in Rhode Island for a short stay, and suggested that they meet up. Their relationship was an odd one, and it had been left off at a rather odd point. They started off disliking each other, and then both of them had trauma at almost the same time. It only took one vague conversation for them to realize that they could understand each other. Unfortunately, Aria graduated not long after that, so they didn’t get the chance to develop their friendship any further. Hopefully they would get a chance to talk more today.
Aria had told her to meet her at Starbucks in the mall. She figured they could grab a cup of coffee and then mosey around the mall a bit and chat. When she entered the mall, she navigated her way to Starbucks and ordered her coffee before taking a seat. There was no sign of Sam, so she just sat and waited.
And now my heart stumbles on things I don't know
