it's a glorious day when morning comes
Every year in the fall, Wentworth hosted a carnival for the city that set up along the peer and even spilled out onto the upper parts of the beach. Everyone went, if only just to escape the perpetual boredom that was Wentworth, RI, and Mikaela was no exception. She'd gone with a few friends, only to branch off from them not even an hour later for different interests. She didn't mind walking around alone, she'd never been the type of person who let those kinds of things get under her skin. She also wasn't the type to focus on having a relationship; the closest she'd come in so long had been a fleeting crush on an exotic looking girl in one of her classes. They'd lost contact, no falling out or anything of the sort and it had been as simple as that. What had come so easily had gone as such.
Mikaela found herself in the section of the fair lined with game booths and carnies shouting above the crowd. The smell of fried fair food hung heavy in the air, definitely her next stop. A water racing game was calling for a last competitor to which she filled the spot after slapping down the requested amount of tokens on the counter. She grabbed her gun, aimed, and was ready as soon as the bell sounded. Immediately her marker dashed up the lines above the rest (okay, so carnival games just happened to be her forte) and before she knew it the lights were flashing to announce her win. A man on the end called for another round and everyone slapped their tokens on the counter. Mikaela again wasted no time outperforming them all, and at the end of this round she was given her choice of one of the largest stuffed animals off their display. She chose a cute pink bear wearing a ribbon, took it from the man with a smile, and darted back into the crowd...spotting her immediately.
She froze, paying no attention to the people bumping into her as she stared the girl down. Autumn was alone too, for whatever reason, and Mikaela took the chance. "Excuse me, miss," she said quickly, coming up from behind her, "But I won this bear for you. I heard that's what you're supposed to do for beautiful girls at these types of things."
Her arms thrust forward, holding out the stuffed bear for Autumn to take. "You caught my attention, so now you get my bear. And some greasy food you'll regret in the morning if you'll give me the honor of buying for you." A smile crossed her face when the flash of recognition crossed Autumn's features...she hadn't been forgotten over time, after all. "I'm thinking fried dough. How do you not get fried dough at the fair, right?" Mikaela couldn't remember the last time she'd seen this girl (last year sometime would be her best guess) but she did know that she was looking even better than the last time she'd seen her. Time did some people well, and her guess was that Autumn was one of the fortunate ones in that way.
Mikaela wanted to ask why such a beautiful girl was here alone or ask if she even really was here by herself, but assumed those things didn't hold much weight in a situation like this. "Or I could show off some more and win you another stuffed animal." Maybe she was getting ahead of herself here, but she was really excited about the prospect of being able to rekindle what they'd had going. In truth, she'd liked her a lot. She liked the way she never made fun of her or called her strange for liking some of the things she did (like feeding the ducks) and never talked down on her for always seeming so happy. It was true that Mik was a little naive, but none of those things seemed to matter when they spent time together and it was something she hadn't truly been able to find in another person aside from her and Ryker's friendship.
now's the time to be alive
