Lawson noted that Ellen's laugh was sad, and he didn't like that. She didn't deserve to be sad. He smiled as Ellen talked about how much her children looked like her and Gabriel. "Then Marcus will grow up to be handsome… Just not as handsome as his Uncle Lawson," he said with a wink. He was touched to hear that his nieces loved him; he loved them, too. "I'd love to see them all again. Who wouldn't love me?" His voice was playful. But his smile faltered when he detected a bit of jealousy in Ellen's voice. Well, what had happened there? Maybe it was just his imagination. That's what he would tell himself so nothing went too far.
He knew he shouldn't have had so much to drink when he was such a lightweight to begin with. What they were doing was so wrong, but it was like he couldn't stop himself. However, how could a man deny a lady her wish? No. This was stupid, he was being stupid. But already his judgement was disappearing and after a long moment of internal debate, the alcohol's judgement won out.
He looked at her. "What's going on at home, Ellen?" Maybe if she could tell him how bad it was at home, then he'd feel a bit better for what they were going to do. But Ellen was soon explaining a lot, and his heart broke for her. Was she sure, though, that she didn't love him anymore? Well obviously she felt it, but was it supported? From what he'd been hearing of his brother, he didn't sound like the greatest husband.
"Maybe it's just the newness and the alcohol…" He wanted to believe he made her feel wonderful even when they weren't drinking, but he'd heard so many stories from clients about what they'd felt before they had an affair. But he could see that she was changing before his eyes, and he wondered if that was just the alcohol and excitement. His heart wasn't prepared for her soft words. "I do, too," he said, voice full of regret. He shook his head. Why did it have to end up this way?
So she'd closed the distance. He wasn't sure how good to feel about that. His heart stopped when she told him to take her back to his hotel, and he shook his head. "We shouldn't, Ellen. It's not worth all the mess it'll make."
