Lawson hummed as he got the house ready for everything he had planned. Today was he and Ellen's third month anniversary. Maybe it was silly that he was celebrating the third month, but he was just so happy that he and Ellen had stayed together this long. He had to admit that he'd had his doubts, just like Ellen had, but they were slowly dwindling away to nothing the longer they stayed together. Natalie was off at a friend's house for the night and so was Marcus, so Lawson and Ellen had the whole house to themselves. He'd decided to surprise Ellen with a candlelit dinner and then an outdoor concert, where he'd sing to her in front of the whole audience. Perhaps he'd embarrass her, and that just made his grin wider.
He hurried around the house making sure everything was spotless, and he was proud to see that it was. He'd kept the house clean while Ellen was away at Yale and he was able to clean it again while she was at the doctor's for a check-up. He'd wanted to go but also knew that this would be the perfect time to get everything together, so he'd told her that he needed to go do a few things and that he was really upset that he couldn't be there; that was all true, just not the whole story for the sake of keeping the surprise. He knew she was skeptical and it took all his willpower to not cave. But he wanted this to take her completely by surprise, and so far it seemed to be working.
When Ellen called and said she'd be home soon Lawson was relieved that everything was already set up. All he needed to do now was light the candles, dim the lights, and turn up the music. The food was already out but covered with silver dome plate covers that he'd found a few days ago. They were real silver and that was only part of the anniversary gift. Soon the candles were lit and the lights were dimmed and soft jazz was playing through the stereo speakers. There was a bouquet of red roses in the middle of two crystal candlesticks and a trail of rose pedals leading from the front door to Ellen's chair.
For a moment Lawson was afraid that Ellen would just laugh at him for doing all of this and he frowned. But it was hard to believe Ellen would do such a thing so he assured himself that it was going to be fine. If she didn't remember they'd been together for three months he wouldn't blame her, because three months is an odd time to celebrate. But he was the one who'd always counted the days until he'd see Ellen again, and now he even counted the days he was with her.
He ran into the downstairs bathroom and straightened his tie and made sure his hair was nicely gelled back. He'd shaved his goatee for the summer so now he was clean-shaven, and he had to admit he looked good in this suit. He smiled and took a deep breath before heading back into the dining room to wait for Ellen to return.
