HISTORY
Brooklyn never grew up with any contact with her father. All she had ever heard were descriptions of what he looked like passed on from her mother, and everything else was a creation of her own devices.
Her father was a married military man -- her mother was his high school sweetheart -- and he returned to their hometown alone to see family. They ran into each other, caught up over dinner, and one thing lead to another and a two weeks later her mother discovered she was pregnant. Although her mother tried to contact him again to let him know of that she was expecting, he refused to have any part in raising Brooklyn. Having an extra-marital affair was grounds for being kicked out of the military and he was not willing to give up that and the life he had with his wife.
Scared, alone, and unsure of what to do next, she turned to her highly religious family members for help. In doing so, the family became outraged at her actions and cut off all contacts with her, and Brooklyn's mother Ashley was forced into stepping up and raising Brooklyn alone.
Although growing up with a single mother and no other family to turn to -- not even siblings -- was hard, it had its benefits, too. Over the years, she and her mother (although struggling) grew up very close to one another and looked out for each other. After all, they're all each other had. Especially since, all the way up until 10th grade, she was somewhat of an ugly duckling of sorts. She was just the 'awkward chubby girl' with no real features that set her apart as someone eye catching or jaw dropping. By 11th grade, she had obtained a job and transformed her look to definitely set her apart from the crowd. She knew that the only thing stopping her from people seeing how fun and how good of a friend could be was an exterior that made her easily passed-over; something she still gets upset thinking about even as a sophomore in college. And shortly after her seventeenth birthday, and unmarked letter showed up in the family mailbox, containing only a set of dogtags -- one with her father's first name on it, and one with her own -- and a note that said 'I think of you always.' They haven't left her since.
Still, even through everything she's largely known through the older members of her community. She and her mother, now much fortunate than how they began, show thanks for their blessings by performing a lot of charity work and community service for animals and people alike. Brooklyn now considers herself somewhat of a bleeding heart. Although she keeps her peers on the outside looking in as best as she can, she can rarely ever can turn away from a human or animal in need...but she doesn't mind sharing her good fortune with others.
When Brooklyn was accepted into Wentworth University, her mother had just been diagnosed with cancer. She'd made up her mind that she wouldn't be going, that she would stay home and care for her mother until her inevitable passing, her mother decided they would make the move to Rhode Island together and continue with their life as normally as possible. So every day, Brooklyn drives too and from her classes, choosing to live off campus to help her mother in her declining state of health.
It's because of all of this she is the way she is, mostly. Her outgoing, somewhat obnoxious, and eccentric behavior is the best way she knows to keep people at an arm's length, which is just how she feels most comfortable. When on the other side, she's an intelligent, driven, caring girl. Part of her, however, is still absolutely terrified that she's still 'the ugly duckling' on the inside.
