Annabel woke up feeling refreshed since she'd thankfully gotten enough rest the night before. She put on some natural makeup and brushed her hair before fixing it in a messy braid. Her bangs fluffed around the side of her face in a stylish way and she smiled. All that curling the previous day was still showing today; she'd have to remember that for the future. She wore a summery cotton dress that reached her knees. It had a brown top but dark blue skirt with flowers on it. To top it off she added her brown cowgirl boots with feathers painted on them.
She grabbed some breakfast and brushed her teeth before getting into her car and heading to the office. She was able to rent a nice space for a reasonable price but hoped to one day own her own building. Thanks to her parents she was able to get the money to have her own private practice, but wanting to be independent she was slowly paying them back.
Her office was a very comforting place. It was like a living room in a house and was decorated with dark wood furniture and burgundy walls with tanned wood trim, and just enough light for people to see but not be blinded; there was a ceiling lamp and a few table lamps. And not only were there comfortable chairs to sit in while her patients waited, but there was also a brown leather sofa that was against a window that started at the floor and ended half-way up the wall. It was wide enough to give a good view of -sadly- the whole plaza and its other buildings. Eventually Annabel wanted a more beautiful view like the ocean or mountains but this would have to do for now. It was better than most offices, at least. A lot of her patients said it was very comforting and a nice change from other doctors' offices. In front of the sofa there was a brown coffee tables that held updated magazines and even some photography books. There was a small water fountain in a corner and soft classical music was playing over the speakers. Sometimes she put on soft jazz or crooners but today she was in the mood for classical.
The building was located in a plaza and was sandwiched between a small Italian restaurant and a gym-go figure. But the walls were thick so no sound came through, allowing privacy and silence for the patients and even Annabel herself. There were three rooms and one bathroom in the office building. One room was the waiting room, the other two were both used for sessions. However, they were decorated in completely different ways. One room was decorated similarly to the waiting room and had a Victorian-era feel to it while the other room had light blue walls, grass green carpet, and white furniture. It was almost like you'd stepped outside in a yard. Annabel believed that colors had an affect on moods so that was why she had two contrasting ones. The dark rooms had a faint cinnamon scent and the light room and bathroom smelled like lemons and fresh linens. The bathroom was like the kind you'd find in a house. Well decorated, clean, and had small shelves with little nick-knacks all around.
Putting her purse down in the dark room she checked her answering machine only to find that no messages were waiting for her. Well, it was still early in the day. Speaking of which... Annabel checked her watch and saw that it was just about time for her first patient of the day. It was a referral; a seventeen year old named Aria Goodman. Supposedly she'd overdosed awhile back and the other therapist felt like he was getting nowhere so he'd referred Aria and her father to Annabel.
She wasn't sure how this girl was going to be the first time around. Was she forced to come or did she want to? Annabel's first thought was that Aria was probably forced, especially if the other therapist felt like they weren't getting anywhere. Patients like that were hard to crack but Annabel liked a challenge. After waiting ten minutes before hearing the door chime Annabel was affirmed that Aria had been forced. Maybe she was just late because of traffic but...
As soon as Annabel walked into the waiting room and saw Aria's face she knew being late hadn't been an accident. Annabel kept back a smile and a chuckle as she walked over to the girl. First impressions were everything and she wanted to make a good one with Aria.
"Hi, you must be Aria. It's nice to meet you. I'm Annabel but you can call me Anna or Bell, if you'd like. Or even Doctor Fearnley but that always sounds too formal." She made sure her voice was at a pleasant but cheery tone and she gave Aria a warm, genuine smile.
A part of Annabel liked being called doctor but she didn't expect any young people to call her that. Sure it showed respect but Annabel believed you had to earn respect. Not force it. Forcing a teenager to respect you really got you nowhere if it didn't send you two steps backward.
"Now I have two rooms. A dark room and a light room. What color room are you in the mood for today?"
